Two bills have been introduced in the Kentucky legislature seeking to legalize medical marijuana. Ky. House Bill 136 was filed on January 9, 2019, and as of February 13, 2019, was before the House Judiciary Committee. Ky. Senate Bill 170 was introduced in the Senate on February 12, 1019. Both bills seem to have at least some support from Governor Matt Bevin, who, as reported by the Lexington-Herald Leader opened up at a community forum about his teenage nephew, who died of cancer. Bevin said that patients like his nephew “should have the ability to use a natural drug that exists to provide relief … when it is needed, where it can be prescribed and regulated as we would other such drugs.” Bevin did not endorse any particular bill, indicating he would have to see how the bill was written. Presently, 33 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana.
