Patriot Coal Company to pay $6.5 million settlement

From the Lexington Herald-Leader:  “Patriot Coal Company has agreed to a $6.5 million settlement for violating the Clean Water Act. The Dept. of Justice said the settlement includes the third largest penalty ever paid in a federal Clean Water Act case for discharge permit violations. Patriot Coal has also agreed to extensive measures designed to ensure Clean Water Act compliance at its mines in West Virginia. Based in St. Louis, Patriot Coal owns and operates 16 mining companies in West Virginia and Kentucky.”
